Ernest Giralt was awarded his Bachelor's degree and Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Barcelona. After a post-doc at the University of Montpellier, he returned to the University of Barcelona where he is Professor of organic chemistry since 1986. He has also been visiting professor at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), (1990-1991), as well as research associate at the Scripps Research Institute, also in San Diego (1990-1991). He is Group Leader in the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona) where he is also currently the Head of the Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology Programme.

His scientific activity is focused in the field of molecular recognition, especially on those aspects related to the design, synthesis and structural study of peptides and proteins, with a special emphasis on the use of the techniques of magnetic resonance. He is the author of several books, over 350 articles in international scientific journals and several patents on the use of peptides as therapeutic agents. He has received numerous research awards including the Premio Nacional de Química in 2011, the Novartis Chemistry Lectureship Award (2011), the Josef Rudinger Memorial Lecture Award (2014) by the European Society of Peptides, the Max Bergmann Medal (2014) and the Premi Ciutat de Barcelona (2015). In 2008 Ernest Giralt was also inducted into the Royal Academy of Sciences and Arts of Barcelona (Spain).
